The name says “Muft Bijli”. The scheme is something more specific than that — and knowing the difference is the whole point of this page.
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a national rooftop solar programme aimed at increasing residential adoption. It supports eligible households that install rooftop solar, helping them generate their own electricity and reduce dependence on purchased grid power.
The programme targets 1 crore households and is currently scheduled to run through 31 March 2027.
₹30,000 per kW up to 2 kW, then ₹18,000 per kW for the capacity between 2 and 3 kW. Above 3 kW the central amount does not increase.

Outside scopeNo. It's linked to the eligible rooftop system and the applicable scheme benchmarks — not a discount on panels. Your project also includes the inverter, mounting structure, DC/AC cables, protection equipment, earthing, installation, metering work and commissioning. The amount is determined under the scheme's rules, not by subtracting ₹78,000 from an advertised package price.
Societies claim differently — and the ceiling is much higher.
Eligible Group Housing Societies and RWAs can receive central assistance for common facilities: currently ₹18,000 per kW, up to ₹90 lakh for eligible systems to 500 kW.

Inspection & metering
The required DISCOM process, including inspection and metering where applicable.
Commissioning
A commissioning certificate is generated once requirements are met.
Submit the claim
Commissioning and banking information submitted through the portal.
Subsidy disbursed
Once approved, the eligible subsidy is transferred per the programme process.
