Why Gujarat rooftops need cleaning far more often than the brochure suggests

Soiling is the largest avoidable loss on most Indian rooftops, and Gujarat is close to a worst case for it. It is also the cheapest problem on this list to fix.

What dust actually costs

Solar modules left uncleaned in India commonly lose somewhere between 15% and 35% of their rated output to dust and soiling. In high-dust states — Gujarat and Rajasthan among them — that loss can reach 25% to 40% through the dry months.

The build-up is faster than most owners expect. Studies of Indian installations report that unclean modules can shed 10% to 20% of rated output within two to four weeks in high-dust areas. A system that was commissioned at full output in November can be meaningfully down by December without anything having failed.

A workable Gujarat schedule

  • Dry season (roughly October to May): clean every 4 to 6 weeks
  • Pre-monsoon, March to June: dustier sites need it considerably more often
  • Immediately after the monsoon: the most important clean of the year
  • Any time output drops noticeably without a fault being logged

Why rain does not do the job

The most persistent myth about rooftop solar is that the monsoon cleans the panels. Heavy rain helps. Light rain actively hurts — it wets accumulated dust into a muddy film that dries onto the glass and shades more effectively than loose dust ever did.

The monsoon also leaves behind what rain cannot remove: mineral residue as water evaporates, biological growth in humid conditions, and bird droppings, which are worse than dust because they block a cell completely rather than dimming it. A single opaque spot on one cell can drag down the string it sits in.

This is why the post-monsoon wash in October matters more than any other clean in the year.

Cleaning without damaging anything

Clean early morning or evening, never in the middle of a hot afternoon — cold water on hot glass is a thermal shock the module was not designed for. Use plain water and a soft brush or squeegee. Skip detergents, which leave a residue that attracts more dust, and skip pressure washers, which can force water past the seals.

Never walk on the modules. Microcracks in cells do not show up visually and do not announce themselves; they show up as output that never quite recovers.

If the array is on a society terrace or a factory shed at height, this is work for someone with fall protection and the right access equipment. It is not a job to improvise.

What else to check while you are up there

Cleaning is the natural moment for the rest of the inspection. Look at the inverter display or app for logged errors and check that daily generation is roughly where it should be for the season. Check DC and AC isolators, look for cable ties that have perished in the sun and left cables resting on the roof surface, and check under the modules for bird nesting — a common and genuinely serious fire and shading issue on Indian rooftops.

The economics are not close

Cleaning is among the cheapest interventions available on a solar asset, and soiling is among the largest recoverable losses. For a commercial array, the output recovered by a proper cleaning schedule typically dwarfs its cost several times over. For a home system, the same logic applies on a smaller scale — a few cleans a year protect a substantial share of what you paid for.
